The conditions were perfect for rugby and Doncaster U13’s didn’t disappoint in this encounter at Castle Park running out 39 – 0 winners against a determined Dinnington side.  On this fresh winter’s morning Doncaster dominated both possession and territory scoring 7 tries and in doing so passed the 400 points mark for the season.

Doncaster started well putting the away side under pressure from the first kick.  Doncaster get hold of possession and after several phases of play 2nd row Tom Hughes picked up the ball from the base of a ruck and dived over for Doncaster’s first try with only 4 minutes on the clock.

Dinnington rallied and started to cause the home team problems.  As the half progressed the game became scrappy with both teams making attacking moves but the defences held and the score remained unchanged until the last minute of the half.  On the 25 minute Doncaster won a lineout 5m from the Dinnington line.  The ball was won and a maul formed from which prop forward Luke Price emerged with the ball to score Doncaster’s second try.

The second half produced a better display from Doncaster and as the pack exerted more pressure, the team began to play a more controlled game and the Doncaster backs began to dominate the opposition.  The third try was scored 5 minutes into the half by centre Oli Green after Doncaster had kept possession several minutes and eventually made an overlap which was exploited through good hands and strong running.  Joe Shakespeare converted the try.

The next two tries came in quick succession both scored by winger Joe Gomes.  The first was a 60m run after fielding the ball straight from the restart and outpacing the Dinnington defence.  The next try was a simple run in after Doncaster won a penalty close to Dinnington’s line, scrum half Mitchell Ashman took a quick penalty and the ball passed through the back line to find Joe Gomes in acres of space to run in an easy 5 points.  Joe Shakespeare added the conversion.

Doncaster’s fitness and control was beginning to pay dividends and after several phases of play the ball was passed down the line and centre Sam Allen ran through a gap in the midfield and crossed for Doncaster’s sixth try.

Doncaster’s final try gave Joe Gomes his hat trick.  In a repeat of his earlier effort he collected the ball from a kick into open play and sprinted 45metres down the touch line to score in the corner.

Doncaster host Altringham at home next week in what will be a tough game with the side missing 12 players who will be on duty with South Yorkshire in the Yorkshire trials at Leeds.
