Sheffield Tigers 5 – Doncaster 14
Two moments of Individual skill from Brad Taylor and Shane Goulding allowed Doncaster to maintain their unbeaten start to 2008.
Doncaster made 12 changes to the starting team that won at Driffield the previous week and were expecting a hard fixture after the 8 – 8 draw earlier in the season at Castle Park.
Tigers were on the attack from the kick off and took control of the game in the early stages of the first half. Doncaster found it difficult to get out of their own half as the Tigers forwards out rucked Doncaster to set up a number of attacks. After 10 minutes, Sheffield broke down the right to score to take a well deserved lead. It was only some excellent last gasp tackling from Connor O’Reilly and Edward Chip that stopped Tigers extending their lead. Doncaster only had one real attack in the first half but were penalised close to the Tigers try line. From the resultant penalty, the Tigers Fly Half kicked the ball straight to Brad Taylor, who outpaced a flat defence from 40 metres to score in the right corner. Connor O’Reilly converting from a difficult angle. Half time Score: Tigers 5 – Doncaster 7.
The pattern of the game was very similar in the second half with Doncaster not really being able to mount any attacks of note to trouble the Tigers defence. After 15 minutes, Doncaster infringed in front of their posts but Tigers missed a relatively easy kick from 25 metres to take the lead. After 21 minutes, the ball popped out a ruck for Shane Goulding to step the Tigers defence from 50 metres to score under the posts. Alex Pugh converting. Tigers never got back in the game after Doncaster’s second try as Doncaster controlled the ball until the final whistle. Final score: Tigers 5 – Doncaster 14.
This was a very pleasing performance as Doncaster would have probably lost this game earlier in the season. In a very tight game, Doncaster only had 2 scoring chances and finished both. Well done for both teams for their endeavour but perhaps not one for the purists.
